Plan and develop pre-production materials (U3: P3, M2)

L:O (U3): Be able to plan and develop pre-production materials for an original media product to a client brief

Fonts

Masthead

The reason that I have chosen this font (DonGraffiti) for my masthead is that graffiti reflects the urban background of Hip Hop. Its thick so can be seen well on a magazine stand and also is obvious that it is graffiti so will be eye-catching to someone interested in urban culture surrounding street art and music.

This is the font that I have chosen for the coverlines of my magazine. The reason I have chosen this font (Whoa!) is because it is easy to read while still looking like graffiti. Another reason that I chose this font is because it looks like it was written with a marker which gives the magazine a raw feel.

This is the font that I have chosen for my double page spread. The reason I have chosen this font is that it is a serif font making it easy to read. From my research, I have discovered that a legible font is really important for my readers.

Colour scheme
The reason I have chosen these colours is that I feel they best represent the Hip-Hop genre as a whole. Black has connotations of darkness and negativity, something that is a common theme in the lyrical content of Hip-Hop.
I chose cool grey because it's more interesting to look at than white. Also, grey is a reminder of the urban background of Hip-Hop giving connotations of the street and concrete.
Lastly, I chose green and yellow because I wanted colours that would pop on the page and also because these colours have connotations of wealth and aspirational dressing, a common theme within Hip-Hop.

Moodboard

My mood board has images of North London artists that have already had an influence on the music scene. These are existing prevalent figures that could provide the new artists in my magazine guidance. Creating a mood board was an important part of pre-production planning because I was able to research into the genre of hip hop, and discover some of the fashions that are part of it. I also looked for settings and themes relevant to North London, because it was a requirement of the brief to celebrate the area. The mood board below demonstrates these fashions and settings. Additionally, the black and white photographs helped me to decide on my colour palette of black and cool grey.

Location Recce

The location of the photoshoot for my magazine will take place at a recording studio in Golders Green at 85 Leeside Crescent. This is the recording studio favoured by my model and artist feature in my magazine, JBC. The nearest transport link that is within walking distance of the venue is Golders Green station situated on the Edgeware branch of the Northern Line. Fortunately, this makes it accessible from all areas of London.
The site itself is on a suburban road with many terraces houses adjacent that look similar so it would be beneficial to use signage to make sure that any personnel involved in the shoot knows exactly where to go.

Hand Draw Sketches

This is my front cover and double page spread. I spent time thinking about the layout of each of these, and how they would best celebrate the genre of hip hop and North London. For the front cover, I wanted the masthead to be eye-catching, occupying a large space at the top of the page. This is a convention of magazine layout, but my masthead is actually bigger than those in other magazines. I did this because I feel that the urban font best represents hip hop so should be one of the most prominent features of the cover. Underneath this, I wanted the words 'North London' to be used in the skyline because the brief stated that this should be a North London-based magazine. By including it prominently in the skyline, it fulfils that part of the brief. The models on the front cover wear fashions associated with hip hop, such as the branded t-shirt, the sunglasses, the tattoos and the haircut. By showing the models in mid shots, I am able to draw the reader's attention to these fashions, making it clear that this is a hip hop mag.

Legal & Ethical Issues

Copyright
When an individual or organisation has legal ownership over material such as an image, video or piece of audio. For my magazine, I won't be using anybody else's material in order to stay in compliance with the law. This means I will be creating all of my own images used in my magazine and any images that aren't mine will be not copywritten. The impact this has on my magazine is that I can't use random photographs on the internet, I have to create my own which is time-consuming and potentially costly.

Libel law
Libel is when a statement is released that is false with the potential to defame someone and or have a negative impact on their reputation. With my magazine, I will make sure any statements from North London artists are printed are written down word for word so that they aren't false. This will prevent artists from needing to take legal action towards my magazine as all content will be truthful. I will also not include any information that could be seen as damaging to the reputation of new artists. My copywriter will also check over the body copy.

Intellectual-property
This is the ownership of a non-tangible idea. These are ideas that have been thought of and legally covered to prevent anybody from using them. In the case of my magazine, the idea as a whole is my intellectual property because I thought of it and it is original meaning nobody has done it before. The impact this will have on my magazine is that nobody will be able to make a magazine that is the same as mine.

Discrimination
This is the prejudice against particular demographics such as gender, race, age, religion and anything else that represents an individual or group of people's identity. I will make sure that all of the text and images in my magazine do not discriminate against anybody and I will be able to control this because of all of the content in my magazine being made by myself.

Being Biased
This is when a media publication favours the views and beliefs of an individual or group of people. Due to the content in my magazine being created by myself, there is a strong chance that the finished product will reflect mainly my perception of the Hip Hop scene in North London, making it biased, but considering I do not have any sort of agenda when creating the magazine other than giving the developing music scene exposure with the hopes for it to grow, I do not feel that being biased will be an issue.

Diversity
I will make sure that the wide range of different demographics that contribute to the Hip Hop scene in North London are equally represented in my magazine. This will not be difficult because of the scene itself being diverse in terms of ethnicity, gender, class and age. I will give insight from all of these different people regardless of their demographics to ensure diversity and the most accurate representation of the Hip Hop scene in North London,
