Responding to feedback (D1)

Learning Objective: Be able to pitch ideas on a proposed media product and respond to questions

I received six pieces of feedback from my final pitch. In the report below, I have discussed what wasn't useful and what will help me to develop my production.

Worries that having only 600 physical copies will make it an online magazine
Upon hearing this opinion, I was in agreement, as my plans were to have one retailer in each North London area which would result in them being so rare that the chance of getting any exposure would be greatly reduced. On reflection, I would be willing to increase the number of physical copies to 1500 so that the magazine would be more accessible to people all over North London, and each corner shop stocking the magazine would have more units. This piece of feedback was useful and therefore, I will be using it to help develop my production.

Criticism towards the magazine being sold in corner shops
The reason I wanted to sell my magazine in the corner shops around North London is that firstly, it is a unique selling point. To have a limited product being sold at a venue that is such a regular occurrence to peoples day to day lives is interesting and quirky. I feel that this is a unique selling point and will be beneficial to my publicity and won't be taking this piece of feedback on board.

Criticism towards the font for "Magazine"
I was told that the font I used for the word "Magazine" was very reminiscent of Matt Groning's "The Simpsons" but I have decided to keep it due to it looking like it has been written with a graffiti marker pen, which reflects the urban background of Hip Hop.

Demographic is too wide (Make it 16 to 30)
My primary target demographic was faced with criticism due to it being perceived as too narrow, from 16 to 22. I actually ended up agreeing with this as Hip Hop has reached a point where there is a significant amount of older fans due to Hip Hop first becoming popular in the 80s. On reflection, I will change my target audience to 16 to 30 which is not an issue because my marketing and promotion will still appeal to these people.

Marketing should include posters
I initially didn't want to make posters because of my USP being that the magazine is environmentally friendly, and printing lots of posters being slightly contradictory of this. On reflection, I think that putting posters up in venues around North London would be a great way to promote the magazine and wouldn't contradict my USP as long as I don't print a large amount of them. Although this doesn't help with the actual development of my magazine, it will help during the marketing stages, therefore, I will consider creating posters.

Must make sure artists promote the magazine correctly
The industry specialist were concerned that artists promoting my magazine could go wrong if they promote it in the wrong way. Its important that the conventions of my magazine are consistent through all of my advertising. On reflection of this feedback, I will give artists a template for the image and text to use so that no errors occur. This is important so that I don't offend either the artist or my target audience.
