Meeting The Client Brief (U3: P5, M4, D1)

Learning Outcome (U3): be able to carry out post-production techniques and processes for an original media product to a client brief

I made sure to export both sample pages as JPEG images so that it met with the client requirements.

Magnetic Lasso
To cut out the main images of my magazine, I used the magnetic lasso tool, which let me cut around the images that I wanted to use. An example of me using this is on my double page spread, I cut out the picture of my model to put in front of my background.

This is the original image that I took during my photoshoot that I decided to use for my double page spread. I used the magnetic lasso to cut around this image and put it onto of my double page spread background. This is relevant to the client brief because the photo is of a North London hip hop artist. The photo was also taken in North London by me which makes it original content. I also used this tool so that I could create a background which had more relevance to the content and genre.

Opacity Tool

Another tool that I used for my double page spread is the opacity tool. I created a rectangle, took a colour from the graffiti background of my double page spread using the pipet tool, and decreased the opacity of the rectangles. The reason I did this is so that the background was visible but I could also make text visible by writing text on the layer above the rectangle.

Another example of me using the opacity tool is on the front cover of my magazine. Here is a screenshot of a label that says "NEW!" to signify the fact my magazine is a new magazine for North London.
Once I had this on my magazine front cover, I realised that it was covering the skyline which made it unreadable. To resolve this I reduced the opacity. Below is the screenshot of the label with reduced opacity which allows the skyline to be read. I used this tool to link with the client brief as it I created original content.
Text Editor
Another adjustment I made in photoshop was the text editor. I used this to edit the outline of some of the text on the front cover of my magazine. I decided to choose a dark green because it was apart of my colour scheme which is a convention of my magazine. The reason I chose this initially is because I felt it was similar to the colours used in urban graffiti. I used the noise tool to make the outline of the letters look more rough and grainy. The reason I did this is because I felt it was similar to the rough concrete found in North London streets.

Another element that I used on both my front cover and my double page spread was a PNG I found on the internet of the Instagram logo. The reason that I used this is because I was promoting the Instagram handle of my magazine as well as my artist. The use of a PNG allowed me to include images without a background, which helped during the editing stages.

Outer Glow

I used this outer glow tool to emphasise the word 'Rap', as that is the genre of my magazine. Using the colour gold as it connotes wealth and power, which is a popular convention of the Hip-Hop genre. This links to the client brief as it reflects the vibrant music scene developing locally (in North London), through the bright gold colour. Additionally, the colours used within the double-page spread are bright and vibrant.

Colour Contrast

I used the colour contrast tool because it brought the subject of my front cover out from the background. This creates a presence on the front cover of a dominant, powerful nature, which is a convention of the Hip-Hop genre. This links to the client brief because it is my own original content which showcases the local talent in North London, and by using the contrast tool, the artist on my front cover is the focal point. I used the tool by playing around with the hues and saturation to emphasise the well-lit image. I also increased lighter tones, which complimented the artist's skin tones and softened the black t-shirt.

Shape Tool
I used the shape tool for my puff because I wanted to highlight specifically that it is the first issue. I also liked how the circle shape was reminiscent of a sticker. I also used a circle because despite this being my first issue, the talent that I can cover is endless, like the edge of a circle. I also used the shape tool for my strapline, where I used a yellow rectangle. In my strapline, I included the Instagram handle for my magazine, so that my readers can interact with my content. This links to the client brief because by interacting with an Instagram page is showcasing local talent in North London and again is showcasing the local talent.
