Learning Outcome 1 U3- Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief.
Learning Outcome 1 U21 - Be able to create a proposal and a pitch for an original media product based on a given brief
The Purpose
The purpose of the magazine is to bring underground Hip Hop artists in North London into the limelight. North London has a flourishing underground scene composed of many sub-genres including infamous scenes such as grime and drill. Some of these genres aren't well represented in mainstream media so by making a magazine about the North London Hip Hop scene, there will be increased awareness of new promising artists as well as how to interact with the scene.
Objective
The objective of the magazine is to reflect the vibrancy of North London and to promote the Hip-Hop scene amongst the artists in North London. We want this magazine to be extremely successful and aim to sell copies monthly.
Genre
The genre that I have chosen for my magazine is Hip Hop because it is a genre of music that is current in the sense that there is a lot of activity going on and lots for me to write about. This means that I will have a wide variety of topics to talk about and that there will be new content to talk about to keep the magazine from becoming repetitive. I will make sure that the genre is reflected in the layout and imagery of the magazine so that the theme is consistent.
Form
My hip hop magazine will be produced in both online and print form. The price of the magazine is 3 pounds per issue and it released monthly but, will cost 2 pounds 50 pence online as an incentive to not waste paper. The online version of the magazine will be available from iTunes magazine section which there will be a link to on a website dedicated to the magazine. I will also provide links to the online copy through the magazine's social media pages in order to drive as much traffic as possible. The physical copy will be sold in off licences. Trying to reduce paper will be good for the reputation of the magazine. The physical copy will be made of relatively thin paper, but card paper on the cover and back. This will keep costs down due to the magazine not having a glossy cover. This is important because the magazine will be sold for 2 pounds 50 pence so in order to turn a profit while still being affordable enough for the primary target audience who between 16-19 with an NRS social grade of C2,D. The magazine also won't be very long in order to keep costs down so will have about 40 pages.
Content
The content of the magazine would include upcoming events because there are always hip-hop gigs happening in North London from upcoming artists and world-renowned artists. Upcoming artists in the North London area will be the focal point of the magazine but it will also cover bigger artists including international artists. The reason I will primarily cover new artists is that the magazine is targeted at North London and it's hip hop artists who are mostly up and coming, but its also important cover established artists so that comparisons can be made. It's important that the two mixes well to give the magazine outside appeal in addition to North London. The magazine would also include album reviews and breakdowns of popular songs in terms of their production and lyrics. There would also be competitions for free studio time as an area of the readers will be aspiring hip-hop artists (USP). The competition will be unique because readers will scan a QR code to enter the competition. This is a good idea because a lot of upcoming artists with talent don't have the money to record music to the industry standard so giving them the opportunity to record in a proper studio will be very beneficial to artists.
Target Audience
The primary target audience of the magazine would be black young men aged between 16-19 with an NRS social grade of C2,D, due to the explicit content of most hip-hop music. Another reason that I chose this as my primary audience is that the founders of the genre were African Americans in New York City. The reason that I chose to put my primary target audience at C2, D is because hip hop is synonymous with working class communities. The reason my magazine will appeal to them is because of the content, being about something that they recognise and can relate with and also the price, being cheap for a monthly magazine. The secondary audience of the magazine would be young men aged between 20-23 of all ethnicities and races to ensure inclusivity. I chose this as my secondary target audience because hip hop music is listened to by people of all races despite its African American origins.

Marketing
I will market my magazine by putting up posters at local North London music venues that play hip hop music. This links to the client brief because it is a North London magazine about a vibrant music scene. On the posters, there will be a QR code that puts people on a mailing list that tells them about future issues of the magazine and its features. Using a QR code is a good idea because it makes joining the mail list which leads to the sale of magazine issues is easy and fast. The main cost of this marketing is paying the venue to advertise and the cost of printing the posters.
Another reason that using a QR code is a good idea is that people who scan it will be given the option to buy the virtual edition of the magazine if they don't want to go to a store that stocks the magazine.
I will also use social media to market my magazine through Instagram and Twitter pages, in order to promote the magazine. The social media pages will also have links to the online copy of the magazine as well as information on where physical copies of the magazine can be purchased. In terms of the content of my social media pages, there will be information on the next issue of my magazine such as artists included being featured on these pages as a form of promotion. I feel that marketing through social media will be effective because of my young primary target audience. Young people tend to use social media a lot so being present on these platforms will likely attract attention.
Distribution
The magazine will be distributed in two ways, in print form sold in corner shops around North London and electronically on iTunes. Selling the physical copy of the magazine is good because people who want a physical copy in North London can get it. It also gives the magazine a feeling of exclusivity as the only place to buy a physical copy is in North London, people outside of North London will only be able to buy the virtual edition. This links to the client brief in a sense that its a magazine for North London that will be in both physical and electronic form.
The virtual edition of the magazine will be sold on the iTunes bookstore which will be linked to the QR code on the posters. This is a good idea because it makes the magazine very accessible. It means that within minutes of looking at the poster they can have an issue to read.
SAMPLE MATERIAL
Masthead

The reason that I have chosen this font (DonGraffiti) for my masthead is that graffiti reflects the urban background of Hip Hop.
Its thick so can be seen well on a magazine stand and also is obvious that it is graffiti so will be eye-catching to someone interested in urban culture surrounding street art and music.

This is the font that I have chosen for the coverlines of my magazine. The reason I have chosen this font (Whoa!) is because it is easy to read while still looking like graffiti. Another reason that I chose this font is because it looks like it was written with a marker which gives the magazine a raw feel.

This is the font that I have chosen for my double page spread. The reason I have chosen this font is because it is a serif font making it easy to read.
ARTICLE IDEAS
Interviews
In my magazine, I would like to include interviews with hip hop artists from North London. I like the idea of interviews because it gives the reader a feeling of getting to know that artist, in the sense that it is a parasocial relationship. I would ask different questions on how they make their music, who inspires them, who they want to work with, and where they're next live performance in North London is.
Album Reviews
I would have an article about North London artists reviewing hip hop albums from all over the world. The reason they won't be reviewing albums only from North London is that not enough albums are produced to always have content. The artists would talk about what they like and don't like about the albums, and what they would have liked.
Upcoming Events
This article will include events that are upcoming in North London, as well as the artists playing at these events and what venues they are performing at. Also included will be how much these events cost to buy a ticket.
EXAMPLES OF COMPETITION

The i-D magazine is competition to Flow Magazine because it features North London hip hop artists. However, it is not exclusively North London hip hop artists and the magazine isn't only about hip hop.
XXL magazine is more similar to my magazine in terms of its content with interviews, album reviews, tour dates, but its an American magazine. My magazine would be like XXL but only for North London.
Moodboard
Colour Scheme:
The reason I have chosen these colours is that I feel they best represent the Hip-Hop genre as a whole. Black has connotations of darkness and negativity, something that is a common theme in the lyrical content of Hip-Hop.
Lastly, I chose green and yellow because I wanted colours that would pop on the page and also because these colours have conntations of wealth and aspirational dressing, a common theme within Hip-Hop.
Hand Drawn Sketches:
These are my hand drawn sketches for my magazine.
